Smart Home Cinema FAQ
General
What is Smart Home Cinema?
Smart Home Cinema is a Windows app that adds voice control to your home movie setup.
It can control local playback through the VLC / PotPlayer package, or it can control your existing Jellyfin setup through the Jellyfin package.
Is Smart Home Cinema a streaming service?
No. Smart Home Cinema does not provide movies, host your media library, or stream media from Smart Home Cinema servers.
The VLC / PotPlayer package works with local movie files on your Windows PC. The Jellyfin package works with your existing Jellyfin Server and the Jellyfin app on a supported TV platform.
Does Smart Home Cinema replace VLC, PotPlayer, or Jellyfin?
No. Smart Home Cinema does not replace your media player or your Jellyfin setup.
It adds voice-control automation on top of supported playback software.
Can Smart Home Cinema control Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video, or other online streaming platforms?
No. Smart Home Cinema does not control online streaming platforms.
It supports the VLC / PotPlayer package for local playback on Windows and the separate Jellyfin package for users who already use Jellyfin Server and the Jellyfin app.
Is Smart Home Cinema suitable for people with reduced mobility?
Yes. Smart Home Cinema enables hands-free movie control using voice commands, which can be especially helpful for users with mobility limitations.
The exact setup depends on which package and control edition you choose.
Smart Home Cinema Packages
What Smart Home Cinema packages are available?
Smart Home Cinema is available through two separate download packages:
- VLC / PotPlayer Package
- Jellyfin Package
The package determines what playback setup Smart Home Cinema controls.
Which package should I choose?
Choose the VLC / PotPlayer package if you want to control local movie playback directly on your Windows PC using VLC or PotPlayer.
Choose the Jellyfin package if you already use Jellyfin Server and want voice control for the Jellyfin app on a supported TV platform.
Do I need to download both packages?
No. Download the package that fits your setup.
If you use local playback on a Windows PC, start with the VLC / PotPlayer package. If you use Jellyfin Server and the Jellyfin app on your TV, start with the Jellyfin package.
Does one license cover both packages?
Yes. One Smart Home Cinema license covers both the VLC / PotPlayer package and the Jellyfin package on your licensed Windows PC.
You do not need to purchase a separate Smart Home Cinema license for the Jellyfin package.
VLC / PotPlayer Package
Can I use both VLC and PotPlayer at the same time?
No. In the VLC / PotPlayer package, you install one player version at a time: VLC or PotPlayer.
To switch later, uninstall Smart Home Cinema and install the other player version.
Can I install Smart Home Cinema on an external USB drive?
Yes. External HDDs and SSDs work, as long as Windows recognizes them as fixed drives, shown as Local Disk.
USB drives that appear as removable storage are not supported.
Can I move the Movies folder later?
No. If you need to change the Movies folder for the VLC / PotPlayer package, uninstall and reinstall Smart Home Cinema.
Do my movies get deleted during installation?
Never. Installation does not modify or delete your movies.
Jellyfin Package
Does Smart Home Cinema replace Jellyfin?
No. Smart Home Cinema does not replace Jellyfin.
Jellyfin Server continues to manage your media library and playback. Smart Home Cinema runs on your Windows PC and sends voice-triggered commands through your Jellyfin Server to the supported Jellyfin TV clients you configure.
What do I need for the Jellyfin package?
You need a Windows PC running Smart Home Cinema, an existing Jellyfin Server, and the Jellyfin app installed on a supported TV platform.
You also need to configure Smart Home Cinema with your Jellyfin Server details and the Jellyfin TV devices you want to control.
Which Jellyfin TV platforms are supported?
Smart Home Cinema for Jellyfin has been tested with several Jellyfin TV client platforms.
LG WebOS and Samsung Tizen have the most complete support. Android TV / Google TV and Amazon Fire TV / Fire OS are supported with client-specific limitations. Roku is not supported.
For details, check the Jellyfin TV Compatibility page.
Can I control more than one Jellyfin TV?
Yes. The standard Jellyfin editions (Local Voice Edition and Voice Assistant Edition) can configure up to four TVs or devices, but control one selected TV at a time.
Multi-Zone Edition supports up to four independent viewing zones, each with its own Jellyfin user session, TV or device, and Movie List. Different people can use those zones separately, including at the same time.
Does the Jellyfin package support Android TV and Fire TV?
Yes, with limitations.
Android TV / Google TV and Amazon Fire TV / Fire OS support the core playback and Movie List workflows, but some audio controls or navigation features depend on what the Jellyfin client exposes through the tested API path.
Where do I find the Jellyfin setup guide?
Use the separate Jellyfin Setup Guide for Smart Home Cinema for Jellyfin.
That guide explains how to configure your Jellyfin Server, Jellyfin TV devices, Command Center folder, and Jellyfin-specific setup steps.
Is Smart Home Cinema for Jellyfin affiliated with Jellyfin?
No. Smart Home Cinema is an independent third-party product compatible with Jellyfin.
It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or maintained by the Jellyfin project.
Voice Control Editions
Which Smart Home Cinema editions are available?
Local Voice Edition and Voice Assistant Edition are available across both Smart Home Cinema packages. The Jellyfin package also includes Multi-Zone Edition.
- Local Voice Edition
- Voice Assistant Edition
- Multi-Zone Edition for Jellyfin
Local Voice Edition uses a microphone connected to the Windows PC. Voice Assistant Edition uses Alexa or Google Assistant through TRIGGERcmd. Multi-Zone Edition uses the same Alexa or Google Assistant and TRIGGERcmd input method, but independently controls up to four Jellyfin viewing zones.
Which edition should I choose?
Choose Local Voice Edition if you want to speak commands into a microphone connected to your Windows PC.
Choose Voice Assistant Edition if you already use Alexa or Google Assistant and want to control Smart Home Cinema through your existing voice assistant setup.
Choose Multi-Zone Edition if you use Alexa or Google Assistant and several Jellyfin users or viewing spaces need to be controlled independently, sometimes at the same time.
Do I need Alexa or Google Assistant to use Smart Home Cinema?
No. Local Voice Edition uses a PC microphone and does not require Alexa, Google Assistant, TRIGGERcmd, Google Home, or a smart speaker.
Alexa or Google Assistant is used with Voice Assistant Edition and Multi-Zone Edition.
When do I need TRIGGERcmd?
TRIGGERcmd is required for Voice Assistant Edition and Multi-Zone Edition.
In both editions, Alexa or Google Assistant sends commands to your Windows PC through TRIGGERcmd.
Do Voice Assistant Edition and Multi-Zone Edition require a paid TRIGGERcmd subscription?
Not always.
For the VLC / PotPlayer package, the TRIGGERcmd Free plan is usually enough for most home users. During normal movie watching, its rate limit rarely affects the experience.
For Voice Assistant Edition or Multi-Zone Edition in the Jellyfin package, a paid TRIGGERcmd plan may be more practical for daily use because Jellyfin voice-control workflows can require commands more frequently.
TRIGGERcmd is a third-party service with its own plans and limits. Smart Home Cinema itself does not require a recurring Smart Home Cinema subscription.
Do I need Alexa or Google Assistant installed on my PC?
No. If you use Voice Assistant Edition or Multi-Zone Edition, Alexa or Google Assistant runs on your phone or smart speaker and communicates with your Windows PC through TRIGGERcmd.
Can Local Voice Edition work without internet?
For the VLC / PotPlayer package, yes. After the required trial or license activation steps are complete, normal local movie playback and local voice control can work without an active internet connection.
Internet is still required for activation, license rebind, optional OpenSubtitles downloads, updates, and other online features where applicable.
For the Jellyfin package, Smart Home Cinema depends on your Jellyfin Server, your Jellyfin TV app, and your local network. Voice Assistant Edition and Multi-Zone Edition also require internet access for Alexa / Google Assistant and TRIGGERcmd.
Can I use Smart Home Cinema without voice control?
Smart Home Cinema is designed for voice use.
Some command actions may be triggered manually for setup, testing, or troubleshooting, but the intended everyday experience is voice control.
Subtitles
Do subtitle commands apply to the Jellyfin package?
The subtitle commands described on the classic Smart Home Cinema pages apply to the VLC / PotPlayer package.
The Jellyfin package works with your existing Jellyfin Server and Jellyfin app setup, where subtitle behavior depends on Jellyfin and the client platform.
Why are subtitles sometimes missing or incorrect?
For the VLC / PotPlayer package, subtitle availability depends on OpenSubtitles.
Not every movie has a perfect match.
Does automatic subtitle synchronization always work?
No. Automatic subtitle synchronization works in many situations, but some movie releases cannot be aligned automatically.
Safety & Privacy
Does Smart Home Cinema upload my files online?
No. Smart Home Cinema does not upload your movie files, subtitle files, folders, media library, playback history, or microphone audio to Smart Home Cinema servers.
The VLC / PotPlayer package works with local playback on your Windows PC. The Jellyfin package works with your existing Jellyfin setup.
Does Smart Home Cinema collect analytics or user data?
The Smart Home Cinema app does not use behavioral analytics, app tracking, or hidden background telemetry.
Limited online communication may be required for trial activation, license activation, license rebind, updates, or other disclosed anti-abuse and licensing actions.
Is it safe to ignore antivirus warnings?
Smart Home Cinema is designed for local automation and does not collect personal media files or modify system files.
Some antivirus tools may flag automation behavior, such as controlling media players or launching local commands. If necessary, add exclusions only for official Smart Home Cinema installation folders and files downloaded from official Smart Home Cinema sources.
Licensing
Can I install Smart Home Cinema on multiple PCs?
No. Each Smart Home Cinema license is valid for one Windows PC only.
Installing the software on multiple computers using the same license key is not permitted.
What happens if I reinstall Windows or move to a new PC?
If you reinstall Windows or move to a new PC, a license rebind may be required according to the EULA.
Does my license cover future Smart Home Cinema packages?
Your Smart Home Cinema license covers the Smart Home Cinema packages that are officially available for your licensed PC under the current product family.
Unreleased future editions or platforms should not be treated as guaranteed until they are officially published.
